Well I hardly expected a flamingo to be the costume of the year, but unfortunately my idea wasn’t so special. Word on the street is H&M (they sell costumes?) and American Apparel both had lame ready-to-wear versions available. Saw plenty of those around town. Sigh…
Even if there were a flock of hot pink feathers posing on one leg this Halloween, I gotta give myself props (bias or not) because my DIY is way better than any in-store option…
- 5 boas
- Loose Feathers
- Glue (Elmer’s, Fabric, etc)
- Orange Felt
- Black Paint (+glitter optional)
- Painter’s tape
- Orange Spray Paint
- Heels (old or thrifted)
Beak: Using the orange felt, cut a large triangle with slightly curved sides and fold in half. This will serve as your beak. Color the tip of the beak black adding glitter if you wish. Allow to dry and attach to hair using bobby pins. Stick feathers in your hair as desired.
Body: Try on pink body suit (mine was from Target) and pin first boa accordingly on your body. Carefully remove leotard and turn inside out to sew boas. Continue process with all boas keeping shape in mind and making sure there are no ‘bare’ areas without feathers. If your boas do not create a point in the back, cut to shape.
Feet: Follow THIS tutorial to tape and spray paint your shoes orange.
